Whitley County Students Win Bluegrass Cellular Contest
Bluegrass Cellular Inc. announced today the winner of a contest that challenged Kentucky high school students in the 40-county Bluegrass Cellular service area to create a video public service announcement about the dangers of distracted driving. Ryan Greer, Seth McCoy, Alex Rains and Cameron Reeves, all seniors at Whitley County High School, created the winning entry entitled “Drive Now Text L8r” as part of a class project. The team will be awarded a $1,000 cash prize.
The contest was part of the company’s Drive Now. Text L8R. wireless safety initiative, which launched earlier this year to encourage drivers to remain hands-free from cellular devices while driving. Since then, the company has asked customers to take the Drive Now. Text L8R. pledge to put safety first. Pledge cards are available online here and at Bluegrass Cellular.
“We were very pleased with the overwhelming response we received from our contest,” said Barry Nothstine, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Bluegrass Cellular. “As a local wireless provider, we care about the safety of our customers and neighbors. We hope this contest encourages students and their families to remain hands free while driving.”
Contest entries were rated by a panel of judges on creativity, originality and consistency of the Drive Now. Text L8R. message. The winning submission can be seen here and distributed via Bluegrass Cellular’s social media channels. Bluegrass Cellular has plans to collaborate with Kentucky State Police to reinforce the Drive Now Text L8R message in high schools. The winning submission will also be featured during those programs.
Bluegrass Cellular also recognized runners up Addie Busser, Amber Felts, Shaunice Green, Danielle Higgs, Cody Kissinger, Aidan Lindsay, Amer Salihovic, Jared Suggs and Adam Wilkey, a group of juniors and seniors at Warren Central High School for their video, “Driving Now. Text L8r.”
Kentucky law prohibits writing, reading or sending a text-based communication while operating a vehicle for all drivers. Drivers under 18 are prohibited from a cell phone in any way while behind the wheel.
